FOSS4G 2013 » Antony http://2013.foss4g.org Free and Open Source Software for Geospatial Mon, 25 Nov 2013 16:32:07 +0000 en-US hourly 1 http://wordpress.org/?v=3.4.2 Early Birds http://2013.foss4g.org/early-birds/ http://2013.foss4g.org/early-birds/#comments Wed, 29 May 2013 18:55:54 +0000 Antony http://2013.foss4g.org/?p=1300 ]]> It’s been a busy few weeks as things start to come together for FOSS4G – we’ve been tackling the logistical challenges of putting the presentation programme together, hoping get the right people in the right rooms, in the right order, in the right tracks… the results will be published very soon (though the listing is already here). In the meantime, the workshop team have got there slightly earlier (well, they had a few less to deal with), and we have to say it looks impressive. We’re working to see if we can fit some more workshops in, so keep an eye out for those.

To give everyone time to have a look at the schedule before booking, we’ve extended the Early Bird registration deadline to the end (in BST) of 14th June 2013. In the meantime, thanks are due to everyone who submitted proposals – there’s something for pretty much everyone, from the old hands to the ‘new to GIS’, and that’s what we were hoping to see.

Call for Presentations ends 12th April http://2013.foss4g.org/call-for-presentations-ends-12th-april/ http://2013.foss4g.org/call-for-presentations-ends-12th-april/#comments Thu, 11 Apr 2013 08:54:25 +0000 Antony http://2013.foss4g.org/?p=997 ]]> Just another couple of days now to get your presentation proposal in for FOSS4G 2013 in Nottingham – there are plenty (250+) of slots to fill, and all the details are here. The call will close at the end of Friday 12th April, so get in early if you can to avoid the last minute rush.

Once the deadline has passed, the Community Voting period will start on Monday April 13th (the link will be added to the page when it’s ready to roll), to allow anyone to vote for the presentations they want to see at the conference. This will take place over a period of two weeks, before the Local Organising Comittee meets in Nottingham on 24th and 25th April to put together the full programme.

Deadlines ahead http://2013.foss4g.org/deadlines-ahead/ http://2013.foss4g.org/deadlines-ahead/#comments Thu, 28 Mar 2013 09:39:06 +0000 Antony http://2013.foss4g.org/?p=969 ]]> Just a couple of days left to submit a proposal for a workshop for FOSS4G 2013: the deadline is the end of March. Remember that workshops are not just about hands-on technical stuff – one of the key aims for this conference is to bring new participants into the FOSS4G world, so there is scope for sessions on, for example, the open source development landscape, or documentation, or testing and evaluating tools.

The deadline for proposals for presentations is just a couple of weeks off, on 12th April. After that we move into selection mode, with community voting on proposals taking place in the period between the deadline and the final selection process by the Local Organising Committee on 24th and 25th April.

In the meantime, look out for news of another major sponsor soon, and keep an eye on the Maptember web site for the ever-growing list of events which will make the UK the mappiest place to be for  four glorious weeks…

Maptember is happening… http://2013.foss4g.org/maptember-is-happening/ http://2013.foss4g.org/maptember-is-happening/#comments Thu, 14 Mar 2013 10:08:23 +0000 Antony http://2013.foss4g.org/?p=888 ]]> As the countdown to FOSS4G 2013 moves inexorably towards the magic 6 months mark, we are starting to see the shape of the conference slowly form before our eyes….

  • Most of the keynote speakers have now been announced, and we’re delighted with the range of experience and perspectives of those who have agreed to help set the tone
  • The Academic Track submissions period is now closed, and the process of selecting papers for publication and presentation is underway
  • Proposals for workshops can still be submitted until the end of March, with another two weeks beyond this (until 12th April to be precise) for proposals for presentations – we’ve had a number of good proposals already, but we are keen to maximise opportunities for hands-on learning and sharing, so don’t hold back if you’ve got an idea!
  • Early bird registration runs until 31st May, but some accommodation types are limited, so get in early if you want the best choice

In the meantime, we’ve busy working on facilities, entertainment options, the hackathon on 16th Sept, and attracting more sponsors (we’re pretty happy with those who’ve signed up so far). And remember, September has officially been designated Maptember in the UK with a whole host of great events, so book out the month now (assuming you haven’t already).

We are open for papers… http://2013.foss4g.org/we-are-open-for-papers/ http://2013.foss4g.org/we-are-open-for-papers/#comments Mon, 04 Feb 2013 09:15:10 +0000 Antony http://2013.foss4g.org/?p=658 ]]> The submission systems for the Calls for Presentations, Workshops, and Academic Papers are all now open, up and running and awaiting your input on the FOSS4G 2013 website. If you’ve got something to explain, share, ask, or just tell the world about, please write up an abstract and get it submitted by:

  • 22nd February for the Academic Track
  • 31st March for Wokshops
  • 12th April for Presentations

Remember that one of the themes of the conference will be ‘Geo for All’, so if you’ve got something to say about how new users, developers, and others can be brought into the world of FOSS4G, we’d love to hear it.

As in previous years, there’ll be a Community Voting period in the second half of April when everyone will have the chance to review the presentation proposals.

And please share this news as widely as you can so that we can all get a great selection of sessions to choose from.

Thanks to the almost 300 who voted in the short timescale (we needed to take a decision at our LOC monthly call), and here’s the official result. We’ll be talking to Naomi about how the logo can form part of an overall website design over the coming week or so. We’re also all looking forward to presenting her prize at FOSS4G 2013.

Here are the all the submitted designs, with thanks to all who submitted for a range of great entries!

Could you make this site look better? http://2013.foss4g.org/could-you-make-this-site-look-better/ http://2013.foss4g.org/could-you-make-this-site-look-better/#comments Fri, 14 Sep 2012 09:44:36 +0000 Antony http://2013.foss4g.org/?p=148 ]]> As you can see, we’re currently working up this website, and we’re looking for some help with the design. We want a site that looks great, works well and reflects the OSGeo ‘brand’, and which we can build on over the coming year. We are using WordPress, and as a model we think the Denver site is pretty good, but we’re open to suggestions. We’re also currently running a logo competition, so the brief will include incorporating the new logo. We would like to get the new design implemented by mid-October.

So if you have some design skills and could help us to get something spectacular in place, we’d be eternally grateful, especially if we can kick this off within the next week or so. Contact us through one of the channels here or by email.
