This workshop aims to demonstrate the ability to setup and play with a full FOSS4G 3D stack, based on latest PostgreSQL/PostGIS database 3D enhancements (with CGAL backend), 3D open datas and (Web|Open)GL renderers.

Talking about 3D generally sounds cool. But for GIS, we really need more than just dragging a mouse pointer around a globe. 3D in GIS becomes cool as soon as we have the ability to deal with full 3D spatial analysis, as we already have in 2D. With functions like intersection, buffer, triangulation and more ... This workshop aims to demonstrate the ability to setup and play with a full FOSS4G 3D stack, based on latest PostgreSQL/PostGIS database 3D enhancements (with CGAL backend), 3D open datas and (Web|Open)GL renderers. Steps for this workshop are: 1) Take various kind of available GIS open data (DEM, CityGML, Collada, 2D shapefiles…) and load them into the spatial database. 2) Perform several 2D and 3D spatial analysis functions with PostGIS 2.1 CGAL backend and PostGIS Raster. 3) Display and navigate into 3D data enhanced with spatial analysis results, using globe apps (WebGL, QGIS + Globe plugin, Google Earth) 4) Talk about performances and OGC standards concerns. Nota: Being fluent in SQL will definitly help to fully appreciate this workshop.
