This workshop will show the importance of well applied cartographic design and how using Ordnance Survey OpenData and QuantumGIS you can create a Robin Hood tourist map.

This workshop will show the importance of well applied cartographic design and how using Ordnance Survey OpenData and QuantumGIS you can create a Robin Hood tourist map. The cartographic design department at Ordnance Survey have recently produced some cartographic design principles to which we apply when making our map products. We would like to share these with the wider cartographic community and this workshop will introduce these principles before allowing the delegates to apply these to their own map. The workshop will help the delegates understand OpenData before highlighting what products are available through Ordnance Survey's OpenData. The workshop will then move onto Opensource software and in particular QGIS. The workshop exercise will begin with us running through some basic QGIS functions such as adding data and styling features before we let the delegates work on their own to create their map. We will provide any data as well as providing some examples of maps created by members of the cartographic design team, purely for inspiration of course! At the end of the exercise we will work through adding the finishing touches to their map such as legends and scales bars. The aim of the workshop is to introduce QGIS at a basic level and we would like delegates to take away an understanding of QGIS and OpenData as well as the importance of applying good cartographic design to your map. We expect users to either have no or limited use of QGIS but any knowledge of OpenData or cartography is welcomed
